ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will personally welcome Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s historic javelin thrower, at Lahore airport, as confirmed by his coordinator, Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan, on Saturday.
Arshad Nadeem, who broke Pakistan’s 32-year Olympic medal drought by securing the first-ever individual gold for the country, is scheduled to return on Sunday. He will arrive in Lahore at 1 a.m. via Istanbul, accompanied by Muhammad Akram Sahi, Chairman of South Asian Athletics.
A grand reception is planned for Nadeem, who will be joined by his coach, Salman Butt. The Athletics Federation of Pakistan and the Sports Board of Punjab are coordinating to ensure a memorable welcome for the national hero.
Nadeem received his gold medal at a ceremony held on Friday at the Paris Olympics 2024 in Champions Park near the Eiffel Tower. His record-setting throw of 92.97 meters in the second attempt clinched the gold, surpassing Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen’s previous Olympic record of 90.57 meters from the 2008 Beijing Games.
In recognition of his achievement, the Punjab government has announced a reward of Rs100 million, while the Sindh government has pledged Rs50 million.
