ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has announced the conferment of the Hilal-e-Imtiaz to Pakistani javelin ace Arshad Nadeem, who made history by ending the country’s 32-year Olympics medal drought with a historic throw of 92.97 meters in the men’s javelin final.
Nadeem is the first Pakistani athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics in forty years.
In the letter, President Zardari praised Nadeem’s achievements, stating, “Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable performance has brought immense pride to the nation on the global stage. His extraordinary success in athletics is a significant source of national pride.”
The Hilal-e-Imtiaz will be awarded to Nadeem under Article 259(2) of the Constitution, which grants the President the authority to bestow honors upon Pakistani citizens for distinguished service in various fields.
Nadeem made history by securing Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics with his record-setting throw of 92.97 meters at the 2024 Paris Games. His victory, notably surpassing defending champion Neeraj Chopra of India, has elevated him to national hero status and inspired many.
Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a commemorative stamp titled “Azm-e-Istehkam” (Commitment to Stability) on Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day to honor Arshad Nadeem. The stamp features Nadeem’s image and symbolizes the nation’s dedication to progress and stability.
The stamp design also includes an image of Minar-e-Pakistan, highlighting the importance of Pakistan’s struggle for independence and ongoing efforts for national stability. The government hopes the stamp will educate future generations about the sacrifices made for the country’s freedom and the continuous pursuit of national stability.
