Pakistan’s President Approves Election Act (Amendment) Bill 2024

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday approved the Election Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 to allow the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to appoint retired high court judges as tribunal members. President Zardari approved the bill under Article 75 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The amendment allows the ECP to appoint retired high court judges as tribunal members by amending Section 140 of the Election Act. The Election Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 has amended section 140 of the Election Act, 2017.

After the amendment, in case of appointment of a serving judge in the Election Tribunal, the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court will be consulted.

After the President’s assent, the Election Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 now became an Act.

The Election Act (Amendment) Bill was passed by the National Assembly on June 28 and by the Senate on July 8.
