ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President, Dr. Arif Alvi, on Tuesday said that urgent steps are required to address Pakistan’s water scarcity, citing it as a significant challenge exacerbated by climate change.

Speaking via video link at the closing session of the 6th Karachi International Water Conference, he stressed the importance of nature-based solutions and fostering civic awareness regarding water conservation.

President Alvi identified water-related disasters, particularly shortages, as clear signs of a climate emergency. He called for a collective effort from governments, corporate organizations, and citizens to prioritize and tackle the issue. The conference, attended by local and international experts on environment and food security, highlighted the critical water challenges faced by the country in the context of climate change.

The president highlighted the necessity of instigating attitudinal changes among the public through educational initiatives promoting conscious water usage. Proposing the adoption of ancient techniques in the construction of water bodies, he underscored the significance of managing water conservation cycles, including flood and drip irrigation, to address food security challenges.

President Alvi suggested implementing a pricing mechanism for water to cultivate civic responsibility and ensure responsible consumption. He drew attention to the teachings of Islam, emphasizing the need to be cautious while using natural resources, including water, to avoid wastage.

Water Scarcity Exposes Economic, Environmental Failures

Referring to a World Bank study linking malnutrition to poor water quality in Pakistan, President Alvi underscored the importance of ensuring access to clean water for the absorption of essential minerals in the body. He asserted that the climate and water emergency had exposed systemic dysfunctions in global, national, and local economies, highlighting the failure to achieve economic, environmental, and social justice for the people.

The president proposed the development of platforms involving communities to encourage preparedness and resilience initiatives for water conservation. He commended the establishment of the Panjwani-Hisaar Water Institute (PHWI) at NED University in Karachi as a demonstration of sincerity and commitment to a national cause.

President Alvi expressed hope that the conference’s deliberations would significantly contribute to actionable solutions on issues related to water, food, and livelihood security.

The event was attended by prominent figures such as Ghias Khan, President of Engro Corporation; Dr. Sarosh Lodhi, Vice Chancellor of NED University; Sami Kamal, Chairperson of Hisaar Foundation; and representatives from academia.
