ISLAMABAD: In a message on National Newspaper Readership Day, the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari extended his congratulations to the All-Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) for their pivotal role in society.

He emphasized the importance of newspapers in raising political awareness and educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities, which in turn empowers them to make informed decisions.

The President urged the newspaper industry to actively promote moral, ethical, and democratic values within the community. He highlighted the need for newspapers to educate the public on socio-economic issues and to foster tolerance, interfaith harmony, patriotism, civic responsibility, and respect for human rights.

“In today’s fast-paced digital age, where misinformation can spread rapidly, the role of newspapers has never been more critical,” Zardari noted. He called on the media to deliver accurate and well-researched news, utilizing modern information technology to combat the proliferation of fake news. “Their responsibility to promote facts over sensationalism is essential in countering false information,” he added.

The President underscored the need for a responsible press that adheres to the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance in reporting. He stressed that responsible media not only provides a platform for marginalized voices but also stimulates healthy discussions among stakeholders on important national issues.

Asif Ali Zardari concluded his message by reaffirming the necessity of a free and responsible press, which he deemed vital for the successful functioning of democracy and for shaping public opinion on both national and international matters. “On this day, let us renew our commitment to support a press that guides and educates the populace on crucial issues,” he stated.

This message resonates strongly in a media landscape increasingly challenged by misinformation, reaffirming the crucial role newspapers play in sustaining democratic values and informed citizenship.
