Pakistan’s Prime Minister Appoints Sikh Lawmaker as Envoy for Kartarpur Corridor

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora as an honorary envoy-at-large for Kartarpur Corridor, a visa-free corridor for Sikh pilgrims traveling to Pakistan.

Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora is a member of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) became the first Sikh legislator in Pakistan in 2013, remaining a legislator until 2018.

The Kartarpur Corridor was inaugurated in 2019 on 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Baba Guru Nanak. The temple in Pakistan, Darbar Sahib Gurudwara, is one of the holiest places for the Sikhs around the world.  Since November 2019, a crossing permits followers from India to visit Kartarpur without a visa.

 

Prime Minister Appoints Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora as envoy for Kartarpur Corridor

After his appointment, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora said that Pakistan is a peace-loving country, and they invite Sikhs and Hindus from across the world, including India, to visit Kartarpur. He added that he would try his best to promote a “soft image” of the corridor as its envoy.

He said that Pakistan is a safe and peaceful country and they are also looking forward to more visitors to the peace corridor. He further said that Pakistan has always promoted religious tourism in the country.

Radio Pakistan also reported that Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora has been appointed as an honorary envoy-at-large for Kartarpur Corridor.
