Pakistan’s Prime Minister Orders Crackdown on Power Theft and Defaulters

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has ordered action against power theft and defaulters in Pakistan.

During a meeting, he directed relevant authorities to immediately address the issue of power theft and submit daily reports on progress. He emphasized that there should be no leniency towards electricity thieves and defaulters.

The premier was briefed on all aspects of the energy sector, including installed capacity, actual generation, and energy supply during different seasons during the meeting. He was also informed about the actual power production capacity and installed capacity.

Prime Minister Calls for Prioritizing Hydel Power 

Prime Minister Kakar emphasized the need to prioritize renewable and hydel sources of energy in the future to produce cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy. 

He urged effective measures to reduce line losses in power distribution companies and called for a comprehensive plan to implement the transformer metering project.

Furthermore, the prime minister advocated for the development of small hydel power projects under expert guidance, highlighting their potential to generate low-cost electricity and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. He suggested a preference for local coal over expensive imported coal in coal power generation projects.

Prime Minister Kakar also directed the immediate commencement of work on 2400 MW solar power projects, emphasizing transparency in the process. He pledged the government’s commitment to reducing the circular debt in the power sector.
