Pakistan’s Smog Hit Areas Forecasted to Receive Rain

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday forecasted rain with thunderstorms and snowfall in northern and southwestern parts of the country over the next three days.

According to the PMD statement, rain is expected to reduce foggy conditions and significantly improve air quality, particularly in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Potohar region and central Punjab.

As per PDM’s forecast, the rain will begin in the northern regions, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, and Mansehra, from the evening/night of November 14 through to the morning of November 16, 2024. These areas will experience rain, along with wind and thunderstorms, and snowfall in the mountainous regions.

Rain in Northwestern KP

Other districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan, Charsadda, Kurram, Orakzai, and Kohat, are also expected to receive rain, with the weather system extending to Murree and Galliyat.

This rain is expected to alleviate foggy conditions and provide significant improvements in air quality, offering relief to citizens, particularly in regions grappling with high pollution levels, PMD stated.

The forecasted rain is expected to help clear pollutants from the air, especially in areas where smog has been a major concern. With pollution levels remaining a pressing issue, this weather system is hoped to reduce the harmful effects of smog and improve the overall air quality.

Rain in Northern Regions

A frontal weather system is expected to approach the upper parts of the country on the evening of November 14. Rain, wind, and thunderstorms, with snowfall over the mountains, are likely in the northern regions, including Azad Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The PMD said that Kashmir, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur and Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamir, Astore, Skardu, Gilgit, Hunza, Ghanche, Shigar is expected to receive rain form tomorrow evening.

Light rain and thunderstorms are also expected in the federal capital, Islamabad, and nearby areas such as Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Jhelum, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Lahore, Mianwali, Khushab, and Sargodha on the evening/night of November 14 and continuing through November 15.

In southwestern Pakistan, light rain with thunderstorms is forecast for Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel, Qilla Saifullah, Bhakkar, Layyah, and Dera Ghazi Khan on November 15.

The PMD said that the prevailing smoggy conditions are likely to subside in Islamabad, the Potohar region, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Punjab during the forecast period, with air quality expected to improve.

However, dense fog is expected to develop in the plains of Punjab following the wet spell.

Advisory for Farmers, Travelers, and Tourists

Farmers are advised to plan their activities according to the weather forecast to avoid any disruptions.

Travellers and tourists are urged to remain cautious and adjust their plans in accordance with the weather conditions, especially in areas where rain, wind, and snow are expected.

All concerned authorities are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to avoid any untoward situations due to the changing weather.
