Pakistan’s University Provides Free Education to Transgenders, Needy Students

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan-based Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Vice Chancellor Dr. Nasir Mehmood said on Monday that his university is providing free education to transgender, people living with disabilities, prisoners, and other needy students in the country. He that the university has a prominent position in the global ranking among universities with more than one million students.

In an interaction with the media, he said that students of Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan can get free education up to matriculation. He said that the University is giving free education to people with any disability, transgenders, and prisoners. He maintained that all these expenses are covered by the University Students Fund.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the university has the largest number of female students.  He said that the full fees of students in flood-affected areas have been waived, while the fees of students in partially affected areas have been deferred.

The Vice-Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) said that the university in the federal capital of Pakistan has also been following the digitalization policy for the last several years.  He was of the view that digitalization has further enhanced the quality of education in the university.

He added that the policy of digitalization will be taken forward as it has facilitated the students a lot. He added that remote areas of Pakistan are their top priority as the university is opening new campuses to make access to education in these parts of the South Asian country.

He said that Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) had set up well-equipped centers in backward areas of the country to support the cause of education. He said that the number of students has crossed one million and efforts are being carried out to further increase it.

He said that all our programs are offered as per the standards set by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. In reply to a query, the Vice Chancellor said that the university is focusing on improving its quality of education. APP
