JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented a post-war Gaza plan suggesting local Palestinian officials, not affiliated with Hamas or its backers, govern the territory.
The proposal, rejected by the Palestinian Authority, includes ongoing Israeli military action against Hamas until certain objectives are met, such as dismantling the group.
Additionally, Netanyahu’s plan calls for Gaza’s civil affairs to be managed by experienced local officials and proposes the dismantling of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
However, some aspects of the plan contradict Washington’s vision for Gaza’s post-war future. While the US supports dismantling Hamas, it advocates for the Palestinian Authority’s gradual assumption of control in Gaza. In response, Abbas’s spokesperson said that Gaza is an integral part of a future independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The spokesperson reiterated the call for an end to Israeli occupation and recognition of Palestinian statehood.
