GEZIRA, Sudan: A devastating paramilitary assault on a village in Gezira State, Sudan, has left a harrowing toll of casualties, with local activists reporting at least 100 deaths. The attack, allegedly perpetrated by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marks yet another tragic chapter in the ongoing conflict that has engulfed the region.

According to accounts from the pro-democracy Wad Madani Resistance Committee, the village of Wad Alnoura bore witness to scenes of horror as the RSF launched two assaults, resulting in the loss of numerous lives. The committee further asserted that the Sudanese army, despite pleas for intervention, did not provide assistance to the besieged villagers.

The RSF’s incursion into Wad Alnoura follows a series of clashes with the army since April 2023, stemming from disputes over force integration. With control over the capital Khartoum and significant swathes of western Sudan, the RSF’s relentless advance has instilled fear and instability across the nation.

United Nations agencies have sounded alarm bells over the looming threat of famine, underscoring the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.

While the RSF has claimed to target military installations and allied militia bases in the vicinity of Wad Alnoura, allegations of civilian casualties and egregious human rights violations have surfaced. Reports of heavy artillery shelling, looting, and the displacement of vulnerable populations, including women and children, paint a grim picture of the atrocities inflicted upon innocent civilians.

In the wake of the brutal attack, the Transitional Sovereign Council, aligned with the army, has condemned the assault as “criminal acts” perpetrated by militias with a track record of targeting civilians. The international community echoes calls for justice and accountability, urging swift action to bring perpetrators to justice and restore peace and stability to the region.
