GILGIT-Baltistan: The Karakoram Highway (KKH) partially resumed traffic, while the Baltistan Road remained shut for the third consecutive day due to heavy snowfall in the region.
Officials informed the Gilgit-Chilas section of KKH has been cleared for one-way traffic, aiming to restore road connectivity with other parts of the country.
Landslides triggered by heavy rain and snowfall had led to road closures, leaving numerous passengers stranded amidst falling rocks and thick snow layers at various points.
Skardu district administration revealed that efforts to reopen the Baltistan Road were hindered by heavy landslides at multiple locations, slowing down clearance operations and affecting the daily lives of locals.
The inter-district roads and other link roads have been reopened, with machinery deployed across the region.
Despite the challenges, no significant damage or casualties have been reported in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Control rooms established in every district to monitor the situation closely.
Meanwhile, the GB government, anticipating heavy rainfall and snowfall until February 27, has instructed relevant authorities to remain prepared for emergency situations and expedite road rehabilitation efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents across the region.
