ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Democratic Movement chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced on Sunday that the sit-in in Islamabad outside the Supreme Court (SC) will continue until Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial resigns.

The ruling alliance of thirteen political parties is ready to hold a sit-in outside the apex court on Monday (tomorrow) to protest the “behaviors of the judiciary”. The development came after the SC issued directives to release of the former Prime Minister Imran Khan and declared his arrest as illegal.

The sit-in comes at the hearing of the Election Commission’s plea asking the top court to revisit its order to hold polls in the Punjab Assembly on 14 May. The petition would be taken a day after the court-ordered polls deadline lapses.

Maulana Fazl claimed in a video message that the sit-in would be staged against the protection provided by a 3-member SC and Islamabad High Court bench to a “criminal”.

Fazl asked the workers of all parties to reach Constitution Avenue in Islamabad at 9 am on Monday (tomorrow) to show national solidarity against the “protection of the criminal by the 3-member bench and the high court”.

The PDM chief and the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s (JUI) Fazl faction said that all preparations had been made for the sit-in and thousands of supporters would reach the venue from all the provinces.

Referring to the relief provided to Imran Khan in terms of bail, he accused the courts were encouraging a “criminal” to weaken Pakistan.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman stresses peace, discipline

He asked workers of Ansarul Islam, the JUI-F’s volunteer organisation, to ensure peace and discipline during the protest. Fazl also requested lawyers to join the sit-in to ensure the supremacy of the law.
