Peru’s Ministers Quit Amid Deadly Protests

LIMA: Two ministers resigned on Friday following violent protests that have rocked Peru since ex-President Pedro Castillo’s impeachment. Peru’s Minister for Education Patricia Correa and Minister for Culture Jair Perez announced their resignations via Twitter, citing the deaths of people during the political unrest in the South American country.

Peru’s education minister tweeted that she has tendered her resignation from the post of education minister due death of people in the country. The country’s Congress rejected on Friday a constitutional reform seeking to bring presidential polls forward to December 2023, one of the main demands of the protesters in Peru.

The cabinet members’ resignations now raise questions about the longevity of President Dina Boluarte’s government. She took oath as a new president on December. 7 following former President Castillo’s impeachment. Former President Castillo’s ouster led to violent protests, with protestors calling for early polls in the country. Officials said that as many as 16 people have been killed in the protest demonstrations so far in the South American country.
