PESHAWAR: Pervaiz Khattak, head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P), has stepped down as chairman following his party suffered a shocking setback in the recent general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Khattak, who previously served as Pakistan’s defense minister and chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, established the PTI-P in July last year after parting ways with Imran Khan’s party amidst the turmoil surrounding the May 9 riots.
These riots ensued when party members launched attacks on military installations following Imran Khan’s arrest from the Lahore High Court.
Mehmood Khan, a former chief minister, has been appointed as the interim chairman of the party.
It’s worth noting that Pervez Khattak contested elections for one seat in the national assembly and two seats in the provincial assembly. However, both he and his sons suffered defeat at the hands of PTI-backed independent candidates in all five seats.
Out of a total of 115 general seats, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-Parliamentarians (PTI-P) fielded candidates for 73 provincial assembly seats and 17 out of 45 national assembly seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Nevertheless, the PTI-P only managed to secure victory in two provincial assembly seats.
