MANILA: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines announced on Wednesday his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with countries that host overseas Filipinos, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their safety and welfare.

The approximately 2 million migrant workers play a vital role in the Philippine economy and contribute significantly to the country’s foreign reserves.

Recognized as “modern-day heroes,” overseas Filipinos are described by Marcos as the driving force behind progress in the Philippines. Central bank data reveals that they sent approximately $36 billion in personal remittances last year, constituting about 8.9 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.

In a video message commemorating Migrant Workers’ Day in the Philippines, Marcos expressed an understanding of the challenges faced by overseas Filipinos, such as being separated from their loved ones, adapting to new cultures, and overcoming barriers. He stated that his administration would work towards building stronger relationships with host countries to ensure the safety, welfare, and well-being of Filipino migrant workers.

Saudi Arabia hosts nearly a quarter of overseas Filipinos, followed by the UAE, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore, and Qatar. Marcos acknowledged the significant contributions made by these workers, stating that they have left an indelible mark on both their host countries and the Philippines, nurturing dreams, improving livelihoods, and driving progress.

Philippines Observes Migrant Workers’ Day on June 7

The Philippines observes Migrant Workers’ Day on June 7 each year, in remembrance of the enactment of the 1995 Migrant Workers’ Act, which establishes standards for the protection and welfare of Filipino workers abroad, their families, and distressed overseas Filipinos. In 2021, former President Rodrigo Duterte signed a law creating the Department of Migrant Workers, tasked with overseeing policies safeguarding overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

On the occasion, Secretary Susan Ople of the Department of Migrant Workers announced training and mentorship programs in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry. These programs aim to assist OFWs in starting their own businesses upon returning home. Ople emphasized the importance of providing OFWs with sustainable sources of income through entrepreneurship, sound investments, or improved employment opportunities in their home country.

The government, non-governmental organizations, and private companies will collaborate to ensure meaningful partnerships and support OFWs in their transition back home. The goal is for returning workers to approach the future with excitement for themselves and their families, with the government bureaucracy, NGOs, and private companies serving as mentors and cheerleaders.
