LAHORE: The outbreak of pinkeye (conjunctivitis) has afflicted Punjab, with state-run hospitals across the province reporting approximately 900 cases in the past 24 hours, local media reported. The distribution of these cases includes 106 reported in Jhang, 93 in Multan, 83 in Bhakkar, 41 in DG Khan, and 11 in Lahore. Over the past 30 days, public hospitals in Punjab have recorded a total of 13,473 pinkeye cases.
The Punjab Health Department notes that the incidence of pinkeye has decreased by up to 5 percent this year, attributed to the monsoon rains. This compares to over 288,000 cases reported from January to September 2023.
Pinkeye, a common and self-limiting condition affecting the lining of the eyelid and eyeball, is treatable at any stage. It spreads easily through contact with contaminated surfaces, close contact with infected individuals, and even through conversations.
To prevent further spread, those with pinkeye are advised to wear dark glasses and separate their bedding and utensils. The public is encouraged to isolate if they contract the infection.
