ISLAMABAD: Prime Minster Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called a meeting of the National Security Committee, the highest national body that oversees security matters, to discuss the law-and-order situation in the country.

The NSC meeting will be held on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 3 pm, and the top military officials will participate.

The session will be briefed on the May 9 violent protests that started after the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan arrested in the Al-Qadir Trust case, also involving a property tycoon. In this case, the Chairman of PTI has been accused of £190 million in corruption.

He was arrested by the paramilitary troops from Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises, erupting protests nationwide by the enraged supporters of PTI.

They set ablaze a Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar, stormed military establishments, ransacked Corps Commander House in Lahore, attacked other assets, and smashed buses resulting in the deployment of the army in multiple cities.

Punjab police claimed that more than 3,000 people were arrested, 152 police officers got injured, 74 police vehicles were set on fire and vandalized, and 22 government buildings, including offices, and police stations, were damaged.

At least eight people lost their lives in the violence, a spasm of unrest experiencing an economic crisis with record inflation, sluggish growth, and delayed IMF funding.

The army taking strict notice of the damage caused to its assets, pledged to bring all those involved in May 9 violence to justice.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday gave authorities 72 hours to arrest all those involved in violent activities after identifying them. The PM said anti-terrorism courts would try the cases.

“Everything at our disposal, including technology and intellect, is being used to track down these pieces. The prime minister stated that prosecuting these individuals will serve as a test case for the government.
