PM Pledges Support for Journalists’ Rights

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged full support from the current government to support the media industry and address its challenges.

In his message on World Press Freedom Day, he reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of the media industry and its workers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to journalists, media workers, writers, and cameramen, praising their dedication to truth. He hailed the bravery of male and female journalists who sacrificed their lives, particularly those covering events in Gaza.

Sharif emphasized that fighting oppression and uncovering the truth were central themes of World Press Freedom Day and lessons from history. He underlined the importance of press freedom and expression as pillars of democracy, essential for protecting civil rights and promoting truth in society.

The Prime Minister urged all stakeholders, including the media to work together to create a conducive environment for smooth media operations. He stated that the government firmly believed that media freedom guaranteed democratic stability.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s improvement by seven points in the World Press Freedom Index during his government’s tenure. He recalled various initiatives undertaken, such as legislation for media protection, health insurance, and substantial financial support to media and media workers through the NIRC.
