PM Says Blue Economy is Central to Pakistan’s Economic Strategy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the government is prioritizing the blue economy as a key component of its economic development strategy.

In a meeting with Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held in Islamabad today, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to working with international partners and the IMO to reduce maritime emissions.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council in attracting investment and modernizing technologies to advance the fisheries and shipbreaking sectors.

He expressed optimism that these efforts, supported by the IMO and other international partners, would elevate Pakistan’s profile on the global maritime stage.

The Prime Minister outlined Pakistan’s goals of expanding fisheries, boosting maritime trade, exploring offshore resources, promoting coastal tourism, and developing a sustainable shipbreaking industry.

In response, Secretary General Velasco praised the Prime Minister’s leadership and Pakistan’s proactive approach to utilizing its maritime resources for economic development.

He commended Pakistan’s active role in the global maritime community and assured continued support from the IMO for advancing sustainable development.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sharif warmly welcomed Secretary-General Velasco and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the IMO.
