ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) on Tuesday reached a consensus to form a coalition government in the Centre after days of talks.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari addressing a joint press conference with PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, former president Asif Zardari and others at Zardari House in Islamabad said the PPP and PML-N have achieved the required number and now in a position to form the federal government.
He went on to say that that PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif will once again become the country’s prime minister.
The development comes as no party could secure a simple majority in the February 8 general elections.
Asif Ali Zardari to be joint candidate for president’s post
“Asif Ali Zardari will be our joint candidate for president’s post,” says Shehbaz Sharif at the press conference.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) failed to achieve a simple majority to form the federal government.
He was confident that the news of the political alliance with the PML-N to form a federal government will lead to a positive response from the trade markets.
He added the details of the sharing of major constitutional posts between the PPP and PML-N will be announced later.
The PPP leader said that both political parties would pull the country out of the ongoing economic crises hoping that they would be able to deliver.
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, speaking on the occasion, said that they had asked the PTI-backed winning candidates to show their majority and form the government but they did not have adequate numbers to form the government.
He said the journey ahead for the upcoming government will not be easy but the coalition will tackle them together.
