Poet, Literary Figure Sufi Tabassum Being Remembered

ISLAMABAD: Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum, a renowned Urdu poet and literary personality best known for creating the lovable character “Tot Batot,” is being remembered on Friday (today) on his birth anniversary.

He was born to Kashmiri parents in Amritsar on August 4, 1899.

Tabassum was a remarkable talent who graduated with a master’s degree in Persian from Forman Christian College in Lahore, spent his entire career as lecturer there, and eventually became the department’s head.

The lovable figure “Tot Batot” and his numerous poetical works from Urdu and Persian into Punjabi are what Sufi Tabassum is best known for.

He was a prolific author and public speaker, and his writings and statements are deeply loved for their elegance and profundity.

Poet in demand

He was also in demand as a speaker for radio and television, where his likable demeanor and in-depth knowledge of the literary arts made him a well-known figure.

Tabassum received various honors for his contributions to literature throughout his career, including the Tamgha-e-Nishane-Sipas award from the Iranian government in 1966 and the Sitara-iImtiaz from the Pakistani government.

He passed away in Lahore on February 7, 1978.
