WARSAW:  Polish authorities said on Sunday that it would deploy 500 police personnel to increase security at its border with Belarus to deal with increasing numbers of migrants crossing as well as any possible threats following the Wagner group relocates to Belarus.

Poland to Strengthen Security on Border with Belarus

In a statement via social media Poland’s Minister of Interior Mariusz Kaminski said that they have taken decision to increase its troops with 500 police officers from counter-terrorism units because of tense situation on the border with Belarus.

The Minister said that the police force would also join 5,000 border guards and 2,000 troops in securing the bordering area.

Poland has blamed Belarus of artificially generating a migrant issue on the border since 2021 by flying in people from the Africa and Middle East and trying to push them across the border. The Polish Border Guard added on Sunday that more than 187 individuals made attempt to cross into their country from Belarus illegally on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Poland’s Border Guard admitted that Poland’s patrols at the border have also confronted more aggressive attitude in the past sixty days as the number of migrants increased.

Deputy Minister Coordinator of Special Services Stanislaw Zaryn said the high security presence was in reply to the move of Wagner group to Belarus.

The Russian President’s decision to offer men from the Wagner group the choice of relocating to Belarus has led to concerns among eastern NATO countries that their presence will also cause a instability in the region.
