ISLAMABAD/PHNOM PENH: Anti-drug police in Cambodia seized over 19 kg of narcotics on Tuesday and arrested a gang of five local men for trafficking illicit drugs, said the Anti-Drug Police Department (ADP).

Aged between 34 and 41, the suspects were caught during raids on three locations in Banteay Meanchey and Kampong Speu provinces on January 8 and 9 after a months-long thorough investigation.

“During the crackdown, a total of 19.15 kg of crystal methamphetamine was confiscated from them,” the ADP said further adding that the suspects have been sent for the prosecution at the Kampong Speu Provincial Court.

14,784 arrests in connection with narcotics in 2022

The Cambodia ADP said that in 2022, they arrested 14,784 suspected drug dealers, including 259 foreigners, and seized 14.5 tons of narcotics. Most seized drugs are ketamine, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, and cathinone.

The country in Southeast Asia does not execute drug traffickers. Those found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illegal substances might face a life sentence in prison under its legal system.
