TUNIS: Political activist Khayam Turki was arrested by the police personnel on Saturday, media reported.
Khayam Turki’s lawyer Abdelaziz Essid told the media that Turki was arrested early morning by police who attacked his house. He added that the political activist was shifted to unknown location. He maintained that Turki was not facing any legal proceeding to justify his arrest.
Khayam Turki had been viewed as a potential candidate to lead the government following the resignation of Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh in 2020. Turki is associated with the social democratic Ettakatol party of Tunisia. The African country has seen a spike in the prosecution and arrest of journalists and politicians since President Kais Saied took powers in July 2021.
Since then, the president’s opponents have alleged him of authoritarianism.
Just over 11 percent of people voted recently in the 2nd round of polls. Several Tunisian political parties, civil society organizations, and political leaders recently expressed their “full support” for the UGTT trade union, alleging the country’s President of “targeting” it.
The top UGTT official Anis Kaabi, was arrested after staged a strike.
In a joint statement, over 66 signatories voiced their complete support for the union, which has been targeted by the officials which consider it to be the last problem in their way of grabbing all powers.

Signatories included the Tunisian Association for Rights and Freedoms, Tunisian Communist Party, and key figures like Youssef Seddik and Bochra Belhaj Hmida.
