Political Groups Slam Taliban for Worsening Flood Crisis in Afghanistan

KABUL: Political and military movements have criticized the Taliban for their perceived failure to establish a “legitimate and accountable government,” exacerbating the suffering of those impacted by recent floods in Afghanistan that left more than 300 people dead.

The Jamiat-e Islamic party issued a statement urging international aid organizations, traders, the Afghan diaspora, and philanthropists to swiftly provide aid to the flood victims.

Similarly, the Freedom Front lambasted the Taliban, saying their incapability in managing natural disasters. The Front accused the group of neglecting their duties towards affected people and perpetuating coercion and discrimination, which only serves to further isolate the nation.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted challenges faced by international humanitarian organizations and relief agencies, citing Taliban-imposed restrictions that have impeded immediate assistance efforts.

Former chairman of the High Peace Council, Abdullah Abdullah, echoed these pleas for urgent aid from aid agencies to assist flood victims across various provinces.

These calls for come as resident in multiple provinces have voiced concerns over the lack of emergency aid and apparent neglect of their needs. In response, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid urged the public to aid their fellow citizens affected by the floods.

According to UN figures, over 300 people lost their lives in floods last Friday in Baghlan province alone.
