LONDON: Polls opened in the United Kingdom’s general election on Thursday, with the opposition Labour party the heavy favourite to gain power and eventually end 14 years of Conservative rule. According to BBC, polls opened at 7:00 am and will close at 10:00 pm, when exit polls will give a strong signal of the final result.
House of Commons
4,515 candidates are taking part in the elections this year. Voters have to be registered, over 18, and either a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, resident in the United Kingdom or registered as an overseas voter. Members of the House of Lords, and Prisoners cannot vote.
Ballots are counted immediately following polling ends, with the results declared from late evening into July 5.
Majority
For an overall majority in the parliament, a party has to secure at least 326 seats.
