SINGAPORE: Pope Francis, on the final leg of his Asia-Pacific tour, urged for fair compensation for migrant workers during his visit to Singapore.

Addressing local leaders, the Pope emphasized the importance of safeguarding the dignity of these workers, who are integral to societal development but often face exploitation and poor living conditions. Despite not naming Singapore explicitly, his remarks are seen as a call for better treatment of the estimated 300,000 low-wage migrant workers in the city-state.

Globally, there are approximately 170 million migrant workers, a significant portion of whom contribute to the growth of affluent cities like Singapore. The Pope’s comments come in the wake of criticisms regarding the treatment of these workers, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic when many were locked down in inadequate dormitories. Advocates have long argued that these workers lack sufficient protection, although the government denies such claims.

The Pope’s address also included praise for Singapore’s development and its harmonious multi-ethnic society, reflecting his admiration for the city-state’s progress and diversity. His visit, which included rigorous public engagements despite his recent health challenges, aimed to strengthen the Catholic Church’s influence in Asia. Pope Francis’s call for fair wages resonates with many migrant workers, including those from South Asia and the Philippines, who face challenging working conditions.
