VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis has urged respect for civilian population in conflict regions and said people were tired of wars and conflicts, which he called a “disaster for the people and a defeat for humanity”.
In a statement, he said humanitarian assistance must be permitted to flow in Myanmar and said the population should be respected also in the Middle East, hit by the war between Hamas and Israel. He also mentioned the misery of people in Ukraine.
The Myanmar army, which overthrew an elected government in 2021, has been fighting an alliance of ethnic minority fighting to end its control of their regions since October.
He also said he learned “with relief” that a group of people including six nuns, had been released in Haiti following nearly a week in captivity. Last week, Pope Francis had called for their release.
