SRINAGAR: In connection with the 76th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) resolution on the peaceful solution to the decades-long Kashmir dispute, a number of political parties displayed banners and posters in certain areas of Srinagar in Indian-occupied Kashmir.
The posters—put up on public places by All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Jammu Kashmir People’s Resistance Movement, Jammu Kashmir People’s League, Jammu Kashmir Students Youth Forum, Jammu Kashmir Democratic Movement and Jammu Kashmir People’s Political League—called on the United Nations to fulfil its commitment to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with its resolution passed on January 05, 1949.
Some of the posters read: “United Nations must fulfil its responsibility regarding the resolution of Kashmir dispute by putting pressure on India”; the BJP-led Indian government is hellbent upon changing the original demography of Jammu and Kashmir”; India is misleading the international community regarding the ground realities.”
The snapshots of these posters were also shared on social media platforms.
The posters also showered praise on Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir for recently issuing a statement seeking an early and durable resolution to the Kashmir conflict.
Historical Footprints
The United Nations Security Council passed a historic resolution on January 5, 1949, which provided for the settlement of the Kashmir issue through a plebiscite: either to join Pakistan or India. The resolution provides a foundation for the resolution of the longstanding dispute, which has turned the whole region into a nuclear flashpoint.
Unfortunately, the only hurdle in the way of enforcement of the United Nations’ resolution is the stubbornness and unpragmatic approach of India, subjecting the innocent Kashmiris to the brutal atrocities by the occupant Indian forces.
