ISLAMABAD: Australia’s aspirations for the upcoming Champions Trophy suffered a significant blow as it had to sideline the power-hitter Mitchell Marsh due to a back injury, prompting Cricket Australia to make the tough choice to extend Marsh’s rehabilitation period.
Cricket Australia released a statement confirming, “His lower back pain has flared up recently, leading the National Selection Panel (NSP) to opt for a more prolonged rehabilitation for Marsh.”
The reigning Allan Border Medallist and 2024 One-Day International Player of the Year, Marsh was a pivotal figure in the squad and a prime candidate for the captaincy should Pat Cummins be unable to play due to his ankle injury.
With Marsh’s absence now confirmed, selectors are racing against the clock to find a suitable replacement, with the deadline set for Wednesday, February 12.
This injury is yet another hurdle for Marsh, who faced challenges earlier this season, including being dropped from the Test team prior to the Boxing Day match against India. His injury compounds Australia’s woes, as Cummins is scrambling to recover from his ankle issue, and Marcus Stoinis is also grappling with a hamstring injury sustained while competing in South Africa’s T20 league.

In his latest performance, Marsh dazzled with an unbeaten 55 off just 40 balls for the Durban Super Giants against Paarl. However, he was forced to leave the field after experiencing discomfort in his hamstring.
Keshav Maharaj, the captain of Durban Super Giants (DSG), remarked, “He felt a twinge in his hamstring. I don’t believe it’s too serious, but as a fast bowler, it’s wise to take precautionary measures. The medical team will evaluate him and keep Cricket Australia updated.”
As Australia gears up for the tournament, they will be looking to fill the gap with a more limited squad.
