MOSCOW, Russia: A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Sunday, with tremors felt across the region, including in the capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The quake, occurred at a depth of nearly 50 kilometers, was centered about 90 kilometers east of the city.
Rescue teams and firefighters are inspecting buildings for damage, but no significant structural issues have been reported yet.
Although the US National Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami threat, it was later canceled, and local authorities did not issue any alerts. Several aftershocks followed the main quake, though they were of lower intensity. Kamchatka, part of the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes and is home to numerous active volcanoes.
