ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: A huge winter storm reached the East and northeastern United States (US) on Thursday, unleashing snow, ice and strong winds after it spawned dozens of tornadoes that killed 3 people and left behind a vast trail of destruction in the south.

Two tornados claimed three lives in western and northwestern Louisiana. They were part of a series of thirty-three tornadoes reported Wednesday in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama where they seriously damaged houses and businesses and affected electricity lines.

Storm put areas of east coast in danger

The huge storm started days ago by dropping sixty centimeters of snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. On Thursday, it was threatening areas of the east coast, from western North Carolina to far northeastern states, dropping up to thirty centimeters of snow and gushing winds of fifty-six kilometers per hour, according to National Weather Service (NWS).

NWS also predicted freezing rain, icing electric lines and roads across the region.
