ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has rejected the request of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to boycott the upcoming by-election on the National Assembly seats, insisting not to leave the field open to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a local newspaper reported on Sunday.

“The PPP leadership has decided in principle to contest the election at any cost. The party, rather, wanted the PDM not to leave the election field open but it has its own reasons,” the newspaper quoted the party’s acting president for Punjab, Rana Farooq Saeed as having said. The PPP has also begun its election campaign with vows to make aggressive canvassing for its candidates.

PPP asked to review decision

The ruling coalition, PDM, had recently requested the Pakistan Peoples’ Party leadership to review its decision about contesting the by-polls on 64 NA seats and let Imran Khan‘s PTI fight against no one.

Terming the decision useless in the face of PTI MNAs’ resignations, the PML-N said contesting by-polls meant “a wastage of funds, energy and time.”

The PML-N had reportedly asked Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to convince Pakistan Peoples’ Party co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari to boycott the polls scheduled for March 16 (for 33 seats) and March 19 (31 seats) all over the country. But the PPP refused to give away its stance.
