RIYADH: The designation of 10 February as International Day of the Arabian Leopard has been praised as the majestic big cat remains critically endangered species with fewer than two hundred in the wild.
Saudi Arabia’s United Nations mission tweeted on Monday that Today the UN General Assembly approved by consensus the resolution regarding International Day of the Arabian Leopard.
It said that the resolution proclaimed the 10 February would be annually observed as the International Day of the Arabian Leopard. It highlights the Arabian big cat, one of the critically endangered subspecies, and focuses on its centratility to wildlife and biodiversity protection, accoeding to Arab News.
In 2022, the Kingdom declared 10 February as “Arabian Leopard Day” in a bid to spread awareness of the endangered animal.
Great campaigner for the protection of Arabian leopards
The Saudi envoy to the US and a great campaigner for the protection of Arabian leopards, Princess Reema bint Bandar, lauded the UN recognition, saying that she was so happy to see the UN Resolution on the International Day of the Arabian Leopard adopted.
She said that Catmosphere, Arabian Leopard Fund (ALF), and The Royal Commission for AlUla have worked enthusiastically to spread awareness about the Arabian Leopard and focus world attention on its plight.
Princess Reema added that the public response to the campaigns like Catwalk and Arabian Leopard Day in the Kingdom have demonstrated a deep and continuing passion for this beautiful animal.
