ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi late Wednesday, dissolved National Assembly (NA) acting on a summary Sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The President signed the summary under Article 58(1) of the Constitution.
As per the constitution, the president has to approve the summary and dissolve the National Assembly within 48 hours, otherwise it would be automatically disbanded after the deadline lapses.
Meanwhile, the most important meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Raja Riaz is expected to take place tommorow to reach at the consensus on the name of caretaker prime minister.
A few days ago, the PM had announced that the national assembly would be dissolved on August 9 by sending a summary to the president, three days ahead of its mandated period, to win a 30-day extra time before the polls are held in the country.
The government is in search of a ‘feasible’ political environment for the elections and thinks that 60 days time – in case the assembly completes its five-year term tenure – is not enough to come into the field.
Speaking at a ceremony at the GHQ in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, PM Shehbaz had confirmed that he would write to the president on Wednesday (today) to dissolve the national assembly.
Caretaker set-up
The prime minister is likely to meet with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz tomorrow (Thursday) to fulfill his constitutional obligation i.e. consultations regarding the appointment of a caretaker premier.
The PM and the opposition leader can consult on the matter for three days, even after the dissolution of the assembly and in case a consensus is not reached, then the matter would be referred to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
