Worldecho Report

President Arif Alvi on Thursday arrived in Lahore’s Zaman Park to meet Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan soon after the government named Lt. General Asim Munir as next chief of the army staff.

The PTI chief had on Wednesday claimed that the President would have a word with him before deciding on the key appointment. He made the remarks while talking to journalists at his Lahore residence, saying that he led the party that Alvi belongs to. The summary the PM office has sent to the President is yet to get President’s nod.

The former premier who was ousted from power in April through a no-confidence vote by the opposition has been criticising the incumbent government with regards to the highly important appointment. Khan said last week that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif wanted a ‘yes-man’ as COAS, adding that the exiled leader wanted to use the next army chief to further his political agenda, which also includes his own disqualification from politics.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s pick for next COAS, Lt. General Asim Munir Ahmed has served as the 23rd Director General of Pakistan’s premier spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) under PTI’s former government until he was replaced with Lt. General Faiz Hameed on June 16, 2019.
