ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has said that the martyrs, Ghazis, and heroes of Pakistan’s armed forces showed their resilience and courage to stand against enemies in the 1965 war for the sake of unwavering national resolve, preparedness, patriotism, and sacrifice.

In his message on Wednesday,  as a tribute to the armed forces in the context of Defence and Martyrs Day, the President said that the brave sons of soil fearlessly fought against the enemy and wrote a shining chapter in history.

“We observe the 6th of September as Defence and Martyrs Day to pay tribute to our martyrs and their families who sacrificed their lives for the sake of their motherland. On this day, 58 years ago, our Armed Forces, backed by the entire nation, showcased extraordinary courage and indomitable spirit and thwarted the malicious designs of the enemy,” Alvi added.

President Alvi further said that he saluted the martyrs of the country who laid down their lives for the homeland, adding that the heroes and Ghazis deserved respect for giving a tit-for-tat response to the enemy’s aggression on Lahore, Sialkot, and other sectors.

While lauding the role of armed forces, Dr Alvi said that the country’s forces have also left no stone unturned and fought with the same spirit during the two-decade-long war against terrorism and extremism. “Our successes in this asymmetrical war are testimony to our brave Armed Forces’ capacity to transform into a unique force having the ability to match the modern-day combat requirements”, Alvi pointed out.

However, the region is awaiting the resolution of the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which requires the international community’s immediate attention as per the UN Security Council Resolutions for ensuring peace, security, and development in the region,” he added.

Recalling the sacrifices of Kashmiri people, women, and children, Dr Alvi said that the innocent Kashmiris have been struggling for their right to self-determination for decades, and Pakistan would continue to extend its diplomatic and moral support to them for their right to choose their own destiny.

“Pakistan is the centre of our hopes. On this Defence and Martyrs Day, we continue to honour and respect the sons and daughters of our motherland, who never hesitate in sacrificing their own life for the defence of the soil, its development, and prosperity”, Dr Alvi concluded.
