PARIS: President Joe Biden arrived in France on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a trip aimed at reaffirming US commitment to European allies and highlighting a contrast in democratic values with his 2024 political rival, Donald Trump.

During his five-day stay in France, Biden will participate in D-Day celebrations in Normandy, where US and allied forces stormed French breaches to defeat Nazi Germany in World War II. He will also deliver a significant speech and engage in a formal state visit with President Emmanuel Macron.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that Biden’s schedule includes meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about efforts to repel Russian invaders.

The president plans to meet D-Day veterans, a poignant moment recognizing their sacrifices.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said that Biden’s discussion with Macron would include the potential use of some $300 billion in frozen Russian assistance in Ukraine.

In contrast to his opponent, Biden has emphasized the importance of upholding and strengthening US democracy following Trump’s tumultuous tenure. Trump’s refusal to accept election results and his supporters’ attack on the Capitol underscored concerns about his commitment to democratic principles.

While Biden’s stance on democracy resonates with many, his unwavering support for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu amid conflict with Hamas has drawn criticism. Some advocate for reevaluating US military aid to Israel in light of alleged war crimes.

Against the backdrop of modern conflicts, such as Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, Biden emphasizes the significance of D-Day and the defense of democracy. He underscores the sacrifices made by soldiers and the importance of preserving democratic values, framing democracy as a central issue in the upcoming election.
