ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi has urged COMSATS University to give its students the opportunity to complete their education after the institution cancelled their admission.
According to a news release issued by the President’s Office on Monday, the university cancelled the student’s admission after he had completed 7 of the 8 semesters of his degree. After 3.5 years, COMSATS cancelled Hammad bin Zain’s admission on the grounds that he was ineligible for admission to the institution in 2017 because he had received fewer than the required number of marks.
The president expressed shock that the university administration could make such a major error by admitting him and then informing him, after a 3.5-year delay, that he was not eligible for admission.
COMSATS’ Incompetence
He noted that the student had paid his fees for the previous eight semesters and had diligently finished the semester course. He continued on to say that equal treatment necessitated that COMSATS rectify the issue by allowing the student to finish his degree program.
President Alvi issued these directives while accepting Hammad bin Zain’s (the complainant’s) representation against the orders of the Wafaqi Mohtasib (WM). The complainant had filed a complaint against COMSATS before Mohtasib, claiming that it was the University’s responsibility to review the eligibility criteria and that if he did not match the requirements, he should have been denied entrance in 2017.
In its decision, the Mohtasib did not grant any relief to the complaint, instead ordering COMSATS to start an investigation into the whole thing and hold the relevant officers/officials accountable for their negligence. Wafaqi Mohtasib’s decision was rejected by the president, who noted that the student was enrolled in the BS (Business Administration) program and had already finished 3.5 years of his degree program.
He claimed that because there was no accusation of misrepresentation against him, the student should not be made to suffer as a result of the university’s administration’s incompetence. He said that the student’s time, money, and efforts would be lost as a result of his enrollment being cancelled. The president approved the student’s representation and directed that Hammad bin Zain’s admission be restored and report compliance to the Wafaqi Mohtasib.
