President Signs 26th Constitutional Amendment

ISLAMABAD:   The 26th amendment has been incorporated in the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan on Monday following the country’s President Asif Ali Zardari inked the bill.

The National Assembly (NA) and the Senate approved the amendment on Sunday night following days of talks between the treasury and opposition benches. Earlier, following the amendment was approved by both the Senae and the National Assembly, the PM signed the advice to be sent to the president of Pakistan for ratification.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent an advice to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari for assent of the 26th constitutional amendment following its passage by both houses of the parliament with a two third majority.

Shehbaz Sharif said that the approval of the 26th constitutional amendment was manifestation of national consensus and solidarity. Speaking in the NA following the passage of the Constitutional Amendment, he has expressed the confidence the new legislation will ensure speedy justice to the ordinary people of the country. Describing it as a major landmark, he added that this was the fulfillment of the incomplete agenda of Charter of Democracy inked by the political parties.

The PM also hoped that this constitutional amendment will secure as well as strengthen the nation’s future.  Shehbaz Sharif stated that the political parties while rising above their personal interests move forward in the best national interest. He thanked coalition parties and the JUI (F) for supporting the 26th constitutional amendment in the National Assembly and Senate.
