BAKU: Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed the establishment of a subregional office for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Kazakhstan.

The suggestion was made during a meeting with FAO Director General Qu Dongyu in Italy, where President Tokayev also expressed his country’s keen interest in strengthening collaboration with the organization.

President Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s desire for UN expert assistance in enhancing seed production, addressing agricultural land degradation, promoting environmentally friendly agriculture, and ensuring the judicious use of water and land resources.

He highlighted Kazakhstan’s active participation in the FAO initiative “One country, one priority product,” which aims to foster sustainable production and trade chains for the marketing of distinctive local agricultural goods.

Additionally, President Tokayev outlined Kazakhstan’s priorities as the chair of both the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the Islamic Organization for Food Security.

He urged FAO support for projects related to land reclamation in the Aral Basin and effective water resource management.
