Prime Minister Wins Vote of Confidence in National Assembly Amid Political Tension

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday successfully got the vote of confidence in the National Assembly and received 180 votes in his favor. The prime minister received 180 votes reposing confidence in his leadership in the 342-member National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said following after Thursday’s vote. “One hundred and eighty members (180) members rose in favor of resolution and the resolution is passed. Consequently, Shehbaz Sharif has obtained the vote of confidence from the National Assembly and commands the confidence of the majority of the members of the NA as the prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan”.

The National Assembly has reposed “complete” confidence in Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership as the federal government remains embattled over the elections with the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

A resolution has been tabled expressing “full” confidence in Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto tabled the resolution in the National Assembly.

Earlier, the PM has decided to take a vote of confidence from the lower house today.  Shehbaz Sharif decided to seek a trust vote following holding consultations with lawmakers of the ruling alliance. He had met the lawmakers at a luncheon held today.

Reports suggest that more than 190 MNAs were present in the house whereas 172 members constitute a majority.
