ISLAMABAD: The diversion work of the River Swat for the multi-purpose Mohmand Dam is on track and would be completed during the current low-flow season, according to sources close to the project.

The contractor has received directives to finish the river diversion work before the onset of the next high-flow season, emphasizing the importance of achieving key milestones to adhere to the project schedule.

The ongoing construction includes concrete works on the upper stilling basin of the spillway, the left and right abutments of the dam, and various components of the diversion system, including the diversion tunnels. Timely completion of these tasks is crucial for the overall progress of the Mohmand Dam Project.

Situated across the River Swat in the Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Mohmand Dam is the fifth-highest concrete-face-rock-fill dam globally. The project’s objectives encompass water storage for agriculture, flood control, urban water supply to Peshawar, and the generation of environmentally friendly hydel electricity. The scheduled completion for the Mohmand Dam Project is in 2026-27.

With a substantial gross water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF), the dam is poised to irrigate 18,233 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda. Additionally, it will supplement irrigation supplies to 160,000 acres of existing land. The installed power capacity of the project is 800 MW, with an annual energy generation of 2.86 billion units. Furthermore, the dam will provide 300 million gallons of water per day to Peshawar for drinking purposes.

As progress continues on the Mohmand Dam, its multifaceted benefits, including agricultural development, flood mitigation, and sustainable energy generation, underscore its significance in addressing key challenges and contributing to regional development.
