LIMA: Peruvian President Dina Boluarte faced a violent incident on Saturday as a protester forcefully confronted her during an event in the Ayacucho region.

The assailant blamed Boluarte for her husband’s death in the mass anti-government protests that unfolded over a year ago, leading to heightened security concerns and renewed focus on the contentious events of December 2022.

During a public event in Ayacucho, a protester approached President Boluarte and forcibly grabbed her, expressing grievances related to the death of her husband during the December 2022 protests. The incident unfolded amid a crowd as Boluarte participated in the event.

The protests in December 2022 erupted in response to the power transition after former leftist President Pedro Castillo’s attempt to dissolve Congress. Dina Boluarte assumed the presidency that month following Castillo’s quick ouster and arrest.

The government’s crackdown on the protests resulted in significant violence, with nearly 50 people reported dead, according to Human Rights Watch. Allegations of extrajudicial and arbitrary killings were directed at the security forces, leading to ongoing legal proceedings accusing Boluarte of responsibility for the deaths.

The woman who assaulted Boluarte explicitly held the president accountable for her husband’s death during the 2022 protests. The incident highlights the lingering resentment and demands for justice related to the events that unfolded over a year ago.

Interior Minister Victor Torres pledged “drastic” disciplinary measures against those responsible for the president’s security. He also announced the dismissal of bodyguards. Prime Minister Alberto Otarola condemned the attack, emphasizing the serious nature of the event and urging against violence for the collective well-being of the nation.

The assault on President Boluarte underscores the deep-seated grievances arising from the 2022 protests and poses challenges to the government in addressing public discontent and ensuring the safety of the head of state.
