PARIS: French workers angry over the pension age increase blocked access to a terminal at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris during the nationwide protests.

The demonstrations on Thursday forced some passengers to get there on foot.

Train services were also disturbed, some schools shut, garbage piled up on the streets, and electricity production was cut, as unions pressured the government to backtrack from the law that delays retirement by 2 years, changing it from age 62 to 64 years of age.

Plumes of black smoke were seen rising from the debris’ burning piles blocking traffic on a highway close to Toulouse, in southwestern France, and wildcat strikes also briefly blocked roads in other cities.

A spokesperson for Aeroports de Paris said that the spontaneous protest near terminal one would not impact flights.

President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday that the bill – which his government pushed through the parliament without voting last week – would come into force by year-end despite increasing tensions.
