RABAT, Morrocco: In a display of solidarity with the Gaza Strip, protests erupted in Moroccan cities such as Tangier, Casablanca, and the capital Rabat.

The demonstrations aimed to express support for Gaza, particularly amidst concerns over potential Israeli attacks targeting the Rafah region, where approximately 1.5 million people have sought refuge in southern Gaza.

Participants in the Rabat protests voiced their solidarity with Gaza and condemned the possibility of Israeli military incursions into Rafah, warning of the grave humanitarian consequences such actions could entail. Moreover, there was criticism directed at the perceived silence of Western nations in the face of civilian casualties resulting from Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Similar sentiments were echoed in Tangier and Casablanca, where Moroccans gathered to denounce Israel’s sustained bombing campaign in Gaza over the past four months. Demonstrators called for accountability, urging that Israel be brought before the International Criminal Court to answer for its actions.

The ongoing Israeli bombardment of Gaza, which began following a Hamas attack on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction. Reports indicate that over 28,858 Palestinians have been killed, with tens of thousands more injured and infrastructure severely damaged. In contrast, the number of Israeli casualties is significantly lower, with less than 1,200 reported deaths attributed to the Hamas attack.

International condemnation of Israel’s actions has escalated, with accusations of genocide leveled against Tel Aviv at the International Court of Justice. A recent interim ruling mandated Israel to cease genocidal acts and ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza, reflecting growing global concern over the situation.
