ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday called for the appointment of a new leader of opposition in the National Assembly before selecting the new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.

Speaking at a press conference after the resignation of ex-NAB chairman, Chaudhry said next opposition leader should belong to the PTI.

Earlier today, Aftab Sultan resigned as the head of the anti-graft body after reportedly refusing to tolerate external interference in NAB affairs.

“We want the leader of the opposition to be appointed first, and the next NAB chairman should be appointed through his consultation,” said Chaudhry.

The former information minister said that no one would accept the current opposition leader Raja Riaz’s consultation as “everyone knows he is a lota (turncoat) and the only distinction between him and Shehbaz Sharif is that of owner and slave”.

He said that if the new NAB chairman is appointed after consulting Riaz then it would be unacceptable as the Lahore High Court (LHC) has already suspended the resignations of PTI lawmakers.

Speaking about the cases against party leaders, Chaudhry said that PTI wants to strengthen the judicial system.

He said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had started a campaign against the five judges who gave verdict against PML-N in the Panama case and the Supreme Court should take notice on it.

“We have decided to go whenever the court calls us,” he added.

PTI’s ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ to begin tomorrow

Chaudhry said that the PTI’s “Jail Bharo Tehreek” will begin tomorrow (Wednesday), adding that the movement would be based on peaceful protests.

In a tweet earlier today, Chaudhry hailed the resignation of NAB chairman, calling it “a big step towards the collapse of the fascist system”.

The PTI leader said Aftab Sultan resigned against “interference” in his work. He added, “I ask the 22 officers who have been appointed to intervene in Punjab to also disassociate themselves from this system, as it is in the interest of both the country and the bureaucracy.”
