ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter on Monday filed a contempt of court petition in the apex court against governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not announcing the date for elections in the province.

According to the party, sixty-two days have passed since the KP Assembly was dissolved but the date of elections has not been announced yet. The apex court had ordered the governor to give a date for polls in the province. Earlier, PTI’s former provincial minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra in a video message said that 62 days have passed since the KP Assembly was dissolved, but the governor has not yet given a date for the assembly elections.

The PTI leader said the election cannot be stopped at anyone’s will. Having an election and forming an elected government of the people is the foundation of the constitution, democracy and federalism, he noted. He said that elections cannot be stopped under the garb of census, economic situation, or under the notion of holding the provincial assembly elections together with the National Assembly polls. He warned that it is dangerous for Pakistan to employ delays to stop the elections.
