ISLAMABAD: The main opposition political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Monday nominated former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly (NA).

In a letter to National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PTI leader Malik Amir Dogar on the directives of party chairman Imran Khan nominated Shah Mahmood Qureshi as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.

Amir Dogar, in his letter to the NA speaker, said that after the Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict, the opposition leader of the National Assembly should be appointed from PTI.

He stated that the federal government should have taken the opposition leader in confidence ahead of appointing the new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.

National Assembly speaker refuses to appoint Qureshi as opposition leader

Earlier, a delegation led by PTI leader Malik Amir Dogar met NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and requested to withdraw Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNAs’ resignations.

The National Assembly Speaker stated that all the resignations of PTI MNAs were accepted in accordance with the NA rules and refused to appoint Qureshi as the opposition leader. He added that letters were sent to the PTI lawmakers for verification, but no MNA turned up.
